Building People of Substance for Works of Power

Happy Mother’s Day, Just A!

We have arrived again at Mother’s Day. It seems a good thing that we take one day a year just to honor the person who carried us around in her abdomen until we could breathe on our own. For most of us, she cared for us when we were helpless and made great sacrifices to guarantee our well-being. If it wasn’t our birth mother who did this, it was someone, and either way we can be grateful. In our fractured culture, there are many exceptions to the ideal scenario, but still, the bible tells us to honor our father and our mother so it will go well with us. Honor means to attribute value. I want to think about the value I received from my mom.

Mama went to be with the Lord nearly ten years ago. She was 89. We didn’t always see eye to eye, but she taught me some really good stuff just from watching her. For this, I am grateful. Mama taught me that:

· Love shows up. She was there at school events volunteering for the field trips and the parties.

· Success comes from working hard and learning new skills. She progressed from a part-time clerk to an officer at the bank by just being willing.

· You make friends by participating. She made friends everywhere she went by volunteering to do stuff. (Then staying up half the night trying to learn how to do it.)

· Bad stuff doesn’t have to destroy you. She survived breast cancer and somehow managed to make being bald into a lot of fun.

· You take care of family even if it’s hard. She took care of my dad and my grandmother in their final years, and they were both a bit contrary.

· Old age really is just a number. She was active in church and community service until the very end. She said she was so busy in her retirement she couldn’t figure out how she ever made time for a job.

Thanks, Mama.

Somebody Said: God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. Rudyard Kipling

Scripture Reading: “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12 NLT)

No matter what your relationship with your mother, I pray you find a way to value something she gave you. If you’re a mom, I pray you feel appreciated for your sacrifice and hopeful for the future of your children. Thank you.
