Get Ready to Vote

I was watching the news recently when they featured a series of interviews with people who do not plan to vote in the next election. I was yelling at the TV screen.  Most of them gave reasons that indicated they had either given up or they didn’t feel they could make a difference.  Later I listened to a pastor who had traveled to Germany to visit the memorials of the Holocaust.  In front of one oven where thousands were cremated lay a wreath with a note of apology and repentance from German Christians.  They had failed to speak up against the power of the state and through their cowardice and denial had allowed the murder of millions.  My question is “How can we not at least vote?”   Some would say that we are at the mercy of the ultimate plan of God for the end of the world.  Jesus is coming and we should be about winning the lost as rapidly as possible.  I will agree on the urgency of the mission, but not on the abdication of responsibility as citizens.  We are to occupy till He comes.  At the very least we can occupy by praying and by voting.  That would seem the minimum investment in this nation that has seen such great moves of God in its day and has financed so much evangelism and compassionate relief.  Our choices must be guided by principle, not party.  Three main areas demand our careful attention:

1.      Moral issues:  We are, or certainly ought to be, “values voters.”  Abortion, marriage, prayer, free speech, and the place of Christ in the public square: all values we cannot afford to let slip.

2.      International affairs: We are the last protection of most of the world from the onslaught of Islamification.  The most notable victim of that onslaught will be Israel, who we must be prepared to defend or perish.  Goats or sheep: the decision will be made November 2.

 3.      Economic issues: What ought our position to be on the economy, taxes, and the public dole?  We must know and we must vote our convictions.  He who controls your resources controls your life.  Is your property yours or does it belong to the state?

Scripture Reading:   Rescue me and deliver me from the hand of foreigners, Whose mouth speaks lying words, And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood—That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; That our daughters may be as pillars, Sculptured in palace style; That our barns may be full, Supplying all kinds of produce; That our sheep may bring forth thousands And ten thousands in our fields; That our oxen may be well laden; That there be no breaking in or going out; That there be no outcry in our streets. Happy are the people who are in such a state; Happy are the people whose God is the LORD!     (Psalms 144:11-15 NKJV)

Somebody said: Voting is a right best exercised by people who have taken time to learn about the issues.  Tony Snow

At the risk of being thought too political, I will exercise my obligation to speak a bit about the issues at hand, encourage you to do your own research, and pray that our republic survives.  If Jesus comes I can look Him in the eye and say, “I tried to tell them.”
