Immigration Uproar a Sign of His Return

What a mess! It’s on the radio, the TV, the newspaper, all my RSS feeds, the alerts on my phone, and in every coffee shop debate.  I live in Arizona, epicenter of the great illegal immigration dispute.  It is just not a safe topic for public discussion.  Emotions are high and the rhetoric is way over-heated.  However, since the end of the Cold War we have watched as the former Republic of Yugoslavia deconstructed along ethnic lines. Africa is in constant turmoil with ancient tribal divisions and hatreds driving mass murder. The term “ethnic cleansing” has become part of the language.  Now, lo and behold, the previously-United States are declaring embargoes on each other while racially driven riots block schools and commerce. I’m sure you have your political opinions as do I, but from a biblical perspective, we shouldn’t be too surprised. Strife between races is prophesied in the scriptures as one sign of the Lord’s imminent return. In Matthew 24:7 Jesus said “nation will rise against nation.”  The word He used was ethnos, not a nation-state as we think of it, but a racial or a cultural group.  Races and cultures at war are listed in the same passage as famines, pestilences and earthquakes.  There are a couple of things we should remember as Christians:

  1. The instruction of the Lord to the disciples in Matthew when He predicted these things was, “See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.  Chill out. It’s gonna get worse, then Jesus comes back! In the meantime, God is big enough to take care of you. This is why you’ve been studying faith all these years.
  2.  No matter where you are in the political debate, the people on the other side are to be loved and respected.  My theory on illegal immigration has long been that the Lord has been gracious to bring the mission field to my front yard. It saves on plane tickets. The immigrant is an opportunity, not an enemy.
  3. If you are in this country illegally and you are a Christian, you should go home or get your papers in order.  The bible says you are to obey the law of the land.  That means whether you like it or not. (Romans 13:1)
  4. As Christians, we are neither Jew nor Greek nor Mexican nor American.  We are a holy ethnos. (1 Peter 2:9)  God started over with us when we were born again, forming a new race of being with glory-blood coursing in our veins.  Skin-color and geographical heritage are irrelevant to the new creature.

Scripture Reading:    But you are the chosen race, the King’s priests, the holy nation, God’s own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9 GNB

Somebody Said

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!    –Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel)

We are in stormy times, but God has prepared us and put us here now for a purpose.  If we can stay full of faith and love, if we can just keep steady, we can live out a divine design never before known by men.  This is not just once in a lifetime, it’s once in an eternity. What a privilege and a responsibility to live in this hour!
